Collaboration in Harney County Finds Common Ground
Citizens working together to find unique solutions through the High Desert Partnership
In Harney County cows outnumber people 14-to-1 and the Harney Basin is one of the most important spring stopovers for migratory birds in the West, playing host to more than 320 species. It’s also where discussions of uses of public land were in the media spotlight last winter.
Local ranchers, conservationists, scientists and federal/local government representatives have come together to form the High Desert Partnership, a collaborative effort to find common-sense solutions to ensure the future of abundant water, wetlands, Malheur Lake, birds and a ranching economy.
